Bowel Motility and Detoxification
Bowel transit time and having well-formed stools are clear signs of digestive health. It is important to move digestive contents along in a timely manner to facilitate the clearance of toxins and avoid gastrointestinal (GI) irritation. GI irritation results from toxicity in the GI tract, and what is even worse, these toxins can re-enter your body (the leaky gut syndrome). If your GI tract is not properly moving digestive contents forward, it is more likely to move them backwards, leading to reflux and indigestion. An ideal transit time between bowel movements is around 24 hours. Many people have poor transit, a transit time of two to three days. The single best way to improve transit time is to add dietary fiber, and the superior source is Fiber Helper™.*
Following The Leptin Diet also supports healthy transit time. This is because eating too often creates a repetitive strain injury to the digestive tract—an injury from overuse. This is similar to "tennis elbow", except in this case it is "digestive elbow". Eating small meals throughout the day puts constant strain on the digestive tract. Instead, it is best to eat three meals per day and consume adequate fiber at each meal in the form of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains or supplemental fiber. Following these guidelines is absolutely essential for a healthy digestive tract and normal digestive transit.*
Many nutrients promote toxin clearance from the GI tract. Top supplement recommendations include Daily Detoxify™, which includes chlorella to support the liver and help clear heavy metals; Sulfur Plus™, which aids in detoxification and is especially important if on a dairy-free/ low-sulfur diet; Immune Plus™, which reduces bloating and removes excess congestion; and Quercetin, which also assists with GI tract toxin clearance. Detoxification challenges often accompany digestive problems. See our Detoxification and Liver Support health topic for more information.*
