What Is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a yellow-orange spice that has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. Curcuminoids are a family of active compounds within the turmeric spice. Curcuminoids are excellent antioxidants. They are shown to help modulate NF-kappaB, the crucial gene signal determining how a cell naturally manages stress and inflammation.*

Curcuminoids are polyphenolic pigments and include curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Turmeric Absorbability

The purity, potency, and absorbability of turmeric and curcumin supplements varies widely.

Typically, turmeric/ curcumin has poor bioavailability (the amount of active compounds that reach the bloodstream). One method to improve bioavailability is to include black pepper extract (BioPerine). This is helpful, but has limitations and still requires large doses (~1500mg) to be effective.
