Study Title:
Cissus Quadrangularis Boosts Bone Density in Perimenopausal Women
Study Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate efficacy of CALZBONE Extract (CZB) in perimenopausal low bone mineral density (BMD) women, and to evaluate safety and tolerability of CZB.
Rationale: Osteoporosis and osteopenia, more common in perimenopausal women, cause reduction in BMD. This leads to skeletal fragility, thereby increasing the fracture risk. CZB has been used in traditional medicine for bone-related problems. In a previous study CZB in combination with other ingredients was found effective in low BMD. CZB being the most active ingredient, this trial was planned to evaluate its singular efficacy.
Methods and materials: After application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 40 perimenopausal women were randomly selected. They were given Cap CALZBONE, made by Geni Herbs, containing 250 mg of CZB extract, three times a day for six months. BMD, serum alkaline phosphatase, calcium and phosphorus were estimated at baseline and after six months of CZB treatment.
Results: BMD was increased by 17%, and T score and Z score were significantly increased after six months.
Conclusion: CZB had beneficial effect on low BMD and was well tolerated. It can be used as an alternative to established therapy of low BMD in perimenopausal women with the advantages of being indigenous, natural and safe.
