Taking a Fish Oil Supplement? Quality Matters
October 24, 2018
Perhaps you’ve heard that you should be taking a fish oil supplement. More and more doctors are even recommending fish oil supplements for various health benefits. However, not all fish oil is the same! There are significant quality differences among fish oil supplements on the market. Know what to look for when choosing your fish oil supplement.
1. Mercury Free: Be sure your fish oil supplement says “mercury-free” on the label. At Wellness Resources, we use a special molecular-distillation process to remove all heavy metals. We also source our fish oil from smaller fish like anchovies, sardines, and mackerel that are lower on the food chain and naturally contain less heavy metals to begin with. Larger fish like tuna and salmon have higher mercury, PCB’s and other heavy metals that are toxic to the brain.
2. High DHA Content: Fish oil is a rich source of the omega-3 oils DHA and EPA, essential fatty acids we must get through the diet. DHA is the most important essential fatty acid for your brain and plays an important role in supporting healthy brain cells, bones, circulation, eyesight, nerve health, and cell membrane health. So, be sure to take a fish oil supplement that provides a higher amount of DHA than EPA. Too much EPA may thin the blood too much or interfere with the absorption or function of DHA in the body.
3. Triglyceride Form: The most absorbable form of fish oil is the natural triglyceride (TG) form. The TG form is more bioavailable than ethyl esters (EE) and is better digested and absorbed. The triglyceride form is a more stable fish oil that will not oxidize in the capsule. Better digestion and less oxidation also means there won’t be a "fishy taste" or burping of fish oil, plus more DHA is absorbed into cells.
If you have been thinking about using fish oil, don’t just grab any supplement off the shelf. Wellness Resources provides mercury-free, molecularly distilled fish oil in Daily DHA, Leptinal, DHA Kids, and the Daily Super Pack. It is in the natural TG form, a highly absorbable “no-burp” fish oil that won’t oxidize in the capsule. Quality of fish oil matters. You and your family deserve the best!
