Non Meat Eaters Should Take Supplemental Carnitine
September 2, 2011
Muscles require carnitine to burn fat efficiently. Not surprisingly, the highest concentration of carnitine in the diet is in the muscle or animals, i.e., red meat. Reduced intake of dietary carnitine results in loss of function of carnitine systems in muscle, reducing the performance capacity of muscle (weaker muscles) and making it easier to accumulate fat in muscle.
The preferred form of supplemental carnitine is acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC), because it also crosses the blood brain barrier and helps your brain function at a higher level of performance. ALC is also a good nutrient to take before aerobic exercise, because it enhances the ability of your muscles to burn fat while you are exercising. This supports weight management efforts while also helping to improve muscle health.
