Fisetin: A Natural Senolytic for Healthy Aging

Nutritional senolytics and senotherapeutics are gaining significant attention in anti-aging research, offering new insights into how we can support healthy aging at the cellular level. The use of plant-based nutrients that support the body’s senolytic activities is important for maintaining healthy physiology. One nutrient stands out for its exceptional senolytic potential—fisetin. Learn more about senescent cells and how fisetin supports healthy aging and vitality.

What is Senescence?

Cellular senescence is a natural biological process wherein cells stop dividing in response to stress or damage. These cells are still metabolically active but stress healthy physiology, leading to loss of resilience over time.

Cellular senescence involves numerous biological changes that affect mitochondrial function, telomere shortening, and apoptosis dysregulation. Senescent cells affect metabolic efficiency, blood sugar, blood flow, endothelial linings, nerves, myelin, proteins and all tissues throughout the body.

The body regularly clears senescent cells out of tissues by immunosurveillance activities. When life events and stress create higher wear-and-tear, then more cells reach a state of senescence. As your body’s immunosurveillance capacity to remove them is stretched, senescent cells gradually accumulate.

Senotherapeutic Nutrients

Senotherapeutic nutrients like flavonoids support senolytic activity, the body’s natural cell turnover. Along with a healthy lifestyle, these nutrients help immune surveillance and other protective mechanisms which aid in helping the body clear senescent cells.

Fisetin

Fisetin is considered the most potent senolytic flavonoid with “exceptional geroprotective and senolytic properties”. Fisetin’s properties include:

•    protects and supports electron transport chain and mitochondrial function and repair
•    antioxidant protection to quench OOH and ROS free radicals
•    activates cell signaling pathways for cellular clean-up
•    supports removal of senescent cells in organs and tissues
•    helps support cellular energetics

Various cell, animal, and human studies show that fisetin supports healthy aging. It helps protect muscles, motor function, and grip strength. It supports the body’s senolytic activities in the brain and nervous system, bones, heart and blood vessels, kidneys, lungs, joints, immune system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, liver and other tissues. These studies suggest that fisetin helps the body clear senescent cells in multiple organs and tissues for healthy aging.

Fisetin is also known as a “nootropic” or a smart nutrient as it has been shown to cross the blood brain barrier and support cognitive health. It is a sirtuin activator which also supports healthy aging.

Fisetin in the Diet and Supplement Dosage

In the diet, the highest amount of fisetin is found in strawberries (160 μg/g), apples (27 μg/g), and onions (5 μg/g) with much lower amounts in other fruits and vegetables. However, the average amount of dietary fisetin intake is 0.4 to 0.8 mg/day or less with the Western Diet.

Human studies oftentimes use 100 mg of supplemental fisetin per day. Some studies use 20 mg/kg/day with intermittent use, i.e. high dose for two days to two weeks followed by a break, then repeat as desired. Studies show that fisetin is safe even at high doses.

Senotherapeutic benefits have also been shown with ongoing use. Older individuals or those who have greater repair needs generally respond more favorably to fisetin supplementation than young individuals.

Fisetin may affect drug metabolism as it can affect various detoxification pathways. Please check with your health care practitioner for more information.

If you look at a photo of yourself from some time ago or after a period of life stress, have you noticed signs of aging? Are you a young 40-, 60-, or 80-year-old or did you start looking and feeling old in your 20’s, 30’s or 40’s? Aging well depends on innumerable factors with diet, lifestyle, sleep, physical activity, environment, and more. Support your body’s cellular processes for healthy aging.
