Taking a Resveratrol Supplement? Read this First
August 17, 2018
Resveratrol is polyphenol antioxidant found in some red wines and believed to be a key reason for the French paradox. Resveratrol acts through a variety of natural mechanisms to support health and much research points to these mechanisms in an anti-aging context by activating a fat-burning gene called SIRT1. If you’re taking resveratrol for it’s many health benefits, be sure your getting the best! Here’s what to look for.
1. High Trans-Resveratrol Content – Trans resveratrol is the active component of resveratrol and the only isomer of resveratrol that has been consistently linked to health benefits in clinical studies. Most resveratrol supplements on the market are just 50% trans resveratrol, and this is what you can assume if no percentage is listed on the label. A supplement label could list 500mg resveratrol, but only contain 250mg trans resveratrol. Trans-resveratrol content can also be hidden in a “proprietary blend”, so you have no idea how much you are getting. At Wellness Resources, we use a high-potency resveratrol standardized to contain 98% trans-resveratrol. And, we tell you exactly how much is in each capsule!
2. High Quality Manufacturing Processes – In a clinical study of 14 different brands of resveratrol supplements, only 5 of the 14 contained the amount of resveratrol that the label claimed it did. The researchers of the study concluded that the products that contained a dose of trans-resveratrol high enough to exhibit health benefits were those labeled “high-potency” and “pure”.
3. High Purification – Many vitamin supplements contain synthetic ingredients, additives, fillers, artificial sweeteners, colors, sugar or preservatives. Always check labels for unnecessary ingredients like these. A truly high purity supplement will be tested for impurities like petroleum by-products, lead, and cadmium.
