Protein Helps Kids Grow
August 26, 2024
Did you know that children need more protein than adults in proportion to their body weight? That’s because children are constantly growing and developing. Children ages 7-12 need .5 grams to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. Thus, if a child is 80 pounds, they want to get a minimum of 40 grams of protein each day, and more if they are active!
Why the importance of protein for children?
- Protein promotes growth of healthy organs and muscles.
- Children need to maintain a positive nitrogen balance, which means they need to consume more protein than they use, to support growth and development.
- Children are generally more physically active than adults, which requires more energy and protein.
- While protein is obtained in a balanced diet, it’s a good idea to have a healthy way for your child, especially your active one to have a simple, quick source of useable protein.
