Build Your New Habit for Better Health
July 22, 2024
As we go through life, we build habits—some good and some bad. These habits touch every aspect of our lives, from how we eat and sleep to how we care for ourselves, treat others, and deal with challenges.
Let's focus on our personal health care habits. The state of our health often hinges on our daily routines. If you find yourself in a rut or noticing a dip in energy and motivation, take a look at your habits. Identify the ones that aren't serving you well. Maybe it's staying up too late, eating before bed, consuming too much sugar, watching too much TV, or being sedentary. Whatever it is, it's in your power to replace the bad habit with a beneficial one.
Creating a new, healthy habit involves making the change obvious. Clearly define what you want to achieve and why it is important. Keep it simple. Make the change satisfying to ensure your new habit is sustainable and even joyful.
Let's say you want to start an exercise routine. Choose specific days and times you'll do your new activity. Go for a walk, do weight bearing exercises, or go to an exercise class. Repeat your routine consistently until it feels natural and becomes your new habit.
Another example could be incorporating a morning meditation. Every morning, find a quiet spot in your home or garden. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. You might use a meditation app for guidance. Enjoy the calm and clarity that comes with starting your day with mindfulness.
If you find yourself eating too much food too often, start a new habit of only buying the foods you need for healthy and specific recipes. Skip the additional foods that only add empty calories. Begin to eat at set times and be mindful of each bite. Chew your food slowly and savor the flavors. This approach will help you recognize the fullness signal so you can stop eating before consuming too many calories. Eating too quickly often leads to overeating before the full signal comes on.
Eliminating bad habits is just as important. For instance, if you find yourself drinking excess alcohol, replace it with a refreshing spritzer. Mix mineral water with fresh citrus, like lemon or lime, for a healthy alternative. Set a new habit such as taking a walk instead.
Building new health habits that are obvious, simple, and satisfying can lead to newfound energy and a more youthful appearance. Take a moment today to look at your habits. Identify the ones that are detrimental to your health and well-being, and start creating clear, new habits to replace the old ones. One by one, you'll see positive changes in your energy levels and youthful vitality.
Every positive decision and habit makes a positive difference!
