Article Highlights:

  • Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant that nourishes the skin from within, promoting hydration, elasticity, and a youthful glow.
  • Astaxanthin accumulates in the skin, offering natural defense against sun exposure and supporting the skin's protective barrier.
  • Clinical studies show astaxanthin improves skin texture and moisture while minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, making it a must-have for your skincare routine.

Astaxanthin for Healthier, Hydrated, and Resilient Skin

Dry, aging, and wrinkled skin often prompts us to seek out lotions, creams, and skin treatments to revitalize it’s appearance. While these products may support skin care, many contain synthetic, non-nutritional compounds that may burden your body with unnecessary toxins requiring detoxification. Thankfully, natural compounds like astaxanthin offer a nourishing solution, helping to protect and support your skin’s vitality without added stress.

Astaxanthin: Antioxidant for Skin Health

Astaxanthin [asta-zan-thin], from red micro-sea algae, provides a diverse array of health advantages. It’s antioxidant ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score is 100-500 times higher than d-alpha-tocopherol, the common form of vitamin E. It has a 10 times higher free radical inhibitory activity than other carotenes, lutein, lycopene, and alpha tocopherol making it a powerful, effective antioxidant.

Known for its positive effects for eye, respiratory, mitochondria, and immune health, astaxanthin benefits extend much further! Astaxanthin also provides proven skin benefits such as protective support for your skin against dryness, loss of elasticity, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It even protects against sun exposure.

Sun Exposure

Sunshine is essential for your health, all living organisms, and our planet. Yet, excessive amounts with inadequate antioxidants or insufficient protection can challenge your health. Whether it’s sunburn or being out in the sun for long periods of time, sunshine and other weather elements can dry out skin, damage collagen, or cause blemishes, aging your skin more rapidly. Astaxanthin provides several biological antioxidant properties and protective functions to help keep the skin youthful and vibrant.

Up to 95% of radiation exposure from the sun is due to UVA radiation and the remainder from UVB radiation. This makes it important for your skin to have a supply of antioxidants within its layers. Dietary astaxanthin is one such nutrient that naturally accumulates in your skin where it provides remarkable protective benefits. It is an ideal antioxidant shown to help protect skin from the effects of UVA and UVB radiation.

Skin Moisture and Barrier Protection

Additional benefits of astaxanthin include protection of the skin epithelial barrier. Keeping this barrier intact is essential for skin strength and elasticity. The skin epithelial barrier is like that in the gut and respiratory tracts where it provides protection and elasticity and is challenged by the environment.

Astaxanthin protects proteins called natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) involved with moisturization of the skin. This is essential for elasticity and integrity of your skin.

Furthermore, astaxanthin suppresses the activities of MMPs (matrix metalloprotease) that lead to skin deterioration. Without essential antioxidant protection, your skin ages more rapidly, becomes dry, pigmented, sags, and develops wrinkles.

Because astaxanthin is naturally stored in the skin, it provides direct and ideal support for skin health. Astaxanthin’s antioxidant activities also protect your eyes from sun exposure.

Science-Backed Skin Nutrient

Several clinical trials demonstrate the effectiveness of astaxanthin for skin health. A recent clinical trial in women evaluated astaxanthin’s effect on skin health using 4 mg of astaxanthin for 6 weeks. Skin moisture content was higher at 3 and 6 weeks. Skin quality with increased elasticity, reduced signs of visible aging, and decreased wrinkling occurred while those in the placebo group experienced increased loss of elasticity.

Other clinical trials on astaxanthin show a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, age-related pigmentation, and improvements in skin texture in men and women. Astaxanthin increased moisture content and elasticity, suppressed the cellular inflammatory response from UVA and UVB-exposed skin, and decreased microbial presence in skin tissues. Researchers concluded that “astaxanthin supplementation over a long period can help in decreasing aging-induced skin deterioration and maintain skin health.”

Nourish Skin from Within

Skin health and quality reflect many aspects of your health. Your skin is an organ of beauty and a first line of defense. It protects us against the elements and helps regulate body temperature. It helps make vitamin D and absorb the sun’s radiant energy. It provides protection against germs, chemicals, and other compounds. Proper nutrition is essential for maintaining your skin’s healthy glow.

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant in the carotene family that provides essential and spectacular protection for skin health and a host of other benefits for your body. I have noticed improvements that my skin is not as sensitive to the sun since using Astaxanthin. I recommend that you add this to your daily routine for skin, eye (lens, retina, macula, etc.), mitochondria, digestive, respiratory, brain, cardiovascular, and immune health!
